Question:

Do companies have a legal obligation to honor the prices they advertise on-line?

I am planning a wedding in the USA while living in Australia. The difference in time zones makes it easier to do a lot of the planning on-line. The problem I am running into over and over is, many companies raise their prices considerably (sometimes several times) and fail to update their websites to reflect this. Are there any laws regarding this? To me it seems like false advertisement.

  1. Prices given are called "offers to do business" and do not constitute a contract.  Many companies will offer the price, but are under no obligation to.  The contract price is the one agreed to when both parties agree.

  2. If you want to spend the money for an attorney to fight the difference in cost, go for it.  It's not really illegal, because they can always throw notices in the fine print and claim you didn't see it.

  3. "Prices subject to change without notice". They cover themselves in their Terms of Service agreements.
