  1. Simple answer: Component, if availabe as an option, will give the best picture from a normal or progressive DVD player. Component can be used with HD DVD or Blu-ray players but HDMI is the preferred connection for these HD players.

Details: Composite (yellow RCA connectors) gives the worst quality picture, S-video (black DIN connector) slightly better and Component (red/green/blue RCA) the best analog picture.

Component can actually carry a 1080p signal several hundred feet (but most electronics limit resolution to 1080i). The main reason for the improved picture is because the three cables separate the colour and B&W picture info (which is combined in composite cables) ensuring a sharper picture (less artifacts).

DVD players output 480i (normal player) or 480p (progressive player ... which usually have component outputs), or 1080i/p (upconverting player). The latter usually have an HDMI output.

Quality of analog cables (e.g. component) matter more than digital cables (e.g. HDMI). Analog is subject to both gradual degradation over distance and interference, so really cheap cables should be avoided.

  2. yes  and the better your equiptment the better the results e/bay is the place to shop or audiogon for the real high-end hope this helps.

  3. Yes, they do increase but not buy very much. componemt cables are used by HD inputs before HDMI came out and just transmit Green, Red, Blue information on seperatate cables. So component cables support resolutions up to 1080i and tend to look a little better at the same resolution.  S video and composite cables can only support up to 480p and can look grainy compared to component. Don't worry about spending big bucks on cable though that is even less imporvement. Go with the cheapest you can at newegg or tigerdirect and save your cable budget for speaker cable where it can make a big difference.
