Question:

Do contacts cause retina tear/detachment?

Cause my parents think so, and are bugging me to go back to glasses. I am willing to wear them less often, but I really want to stick with contacts. I had laser done in my right eye last year and this year my left eye has a small tear, and might or might not require laser. Is this due to contacts?

  1. Retinal detatchments occur inside the eye.  Therefore can not be caused by a device on the outside of the eye.  A retinal tear or detachment usually occur in people that are extrememly nearsighted,

-8.00 or greater or by trauma.  Occasionaly happens for other reasons but less common.  What can happen is when people do not take proper care of their contact they can get infections, abrasions or ulcers to name the more common.  So remember to take good care of your contacts.

  2. No, your contacts do not cause this. Your ophthalmologist should be consulted before you wear contacts. The contacts sit on your corneal surface, not on the inside of your eye where the retinal problem is. I have never heard of contacts causing any retinal problems ever.
