Do convicts actually get raped by their fellow prisonmates and their gaurds?

In a lot of comedies they often joke about convicts getting raped in jail and tossing the salad. Is this true? Is it allowed?

yes it's very true. rape is one of the number one crimes that take place within prison walls. it's typically prisoners raping each other.

edit. obviously not everyone gets raped but a dear friend of mine who was imprisoned for 8 years told me it happens. and NO it's not allowed.

no my dads was in prison and it never happened to him, he got stripped searched though and some bloke he got to know in there was ******* the women s***w (officer)

WELL JUST ABOUT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE WITH DEPRAVED BEHAVIOUR OF SOME OF PEOPLE IN OUR SOCIETY. SO YES NO DOUBT IT HAPPENS AS IT HAPPENS IN NORMAL WALK OF LIFE. But I don`t think the warders would willfully allow it to happen in (legal) prisons but I have heard the CIA and the likes have used sexual abuse as means of torure on people to xtract information.

I do not know of any guard raping an inmate.  I do know of a female guard that was involved in a sexual relationship with a male inmate.

Rape in prison does not happen as often as they make it seem in the movies.  A lot of it would depend on the type of criminals in that particular prison and the number of guards there to monitor the inmates.  In the prisons I worked at, in the 4 years I was there, I only heard of one incident involving a sexual assault.

It's against the law in prison just like on the outside.  Does it happen-yes-and usually it is kept quiet due to threats of violence by the inmate doing the raping.  

Guards do not rape inmates.  They would be fired and prosecuted.  Has it happened-yes--but it is very rare.

That's no joke.  Physical assault is common place in prison and rape is one of the problems.  

Murder in prison is not "allowed" but it certainly happens.

Many criminal experts consider rape not to be sexual in origin, but rather an expressed emotion of rage and control over another human being.  Where are you going to find more enraged individuals and people seeking control, then in a prison?

Let's face it, convicts are not people who like to follow rules.

Not sure, from what I hear, yes, People get lonely and if you think about the people in there. They do not use restraints and proper descision making on the outside of prison. I am sure that they are like sick dogs that need to bury their bones (pardon the pun)

By guards, not typically.  But by other inmates, definitely!  It depends on the prison though.  There are some federal prisons and minimal security facilities that rape is not as common.  But in your standard maximum security state prison, YES!  They know it goes on and unless it's being done in the WIDE open, they don't necessarily try to stop it.  There are lots of areas, gym, shower, etc where it is easy for another convict or group of convicts to physically overcome and rape another inmate.  It is also done with a lot of fear and intimidation.  Usually the weaker guys are the ones who have it the worse.  But if your a bad ***, and gain respect from the other prisoners, than you may not get raped.  You have to gain respect in prison and stand up for yourself.  Some inmates also befriend others who have influence and can more or less buy themselves protection.  Like one inmate getting protected by another who has a great amount of respect and influence.  Prison life is made up of power and prestige.  You could also become some other inmates b****, but than your getting raped in another way.  But I've heard of poor soles that got so abused in prison, they had to actually be removed and put somewhere else.  It's no picnic.  If anyone is expecting to go to prison or breaking laws that could get you there, I have some advice.  Work out, stay in great shape, learn some martial arts.  You will need your skills!

By the way inmates are always encouraged to stay quiet when rape happens.  They only report it if an inmate files a complaint.  Than, he will get reprisal (even worse) when he goes back to his cell block.

No inmate who has been in prison will ever admit to getting raped.  My friend who spend 3 years in Mansfield (whom I heard had to be moved out of there from so much abuse), outright denied ever getting touched by anyone.  A man's pride would never allow him to admit such a terrible thing.  It's a silent crime for the most part, but it DOES happen!!!!
