when you're driving do they allow an extra 5 miles, i especially ask because i live in an area that has a lot of hills, so its fairly easy to go an extra 1-5 miles on accident i always catch myself and slow down, but yeah. or do they allow any miles at all? i live in texas if that helps.

  1. I've never lived or driven in Texas but it is unlikely you will get pulled over for 5mph over the limit unless conditions are really far from optimal (construction zones, really bad weather, etc).  I would also suggest that people focus on driving rather than the speedometer trying to stay within +/- 5mph.

  2. When it comes to allowing 5mph it is all about officer discretion. Some will allow it, some won't, some will allow more.

About your speedometer...your speedometer should be pretty accurate as long as you have not changed anything on your vehicle that would effect it. One of the most common reasons people find their speedometer is no longer accurate is that they change the size of the tires and/or wheels their car originally came with.

  3. Most do, but make sure your speedometer is calibrated correctly. Remember what the large pedal on the left is since it can save you from getting a ticket.

  4. my personal choice to is 9mph over the posted limit.

but sometimes, I just bump the strobes to slow them down.

  5. Some do and some don't depends on how they feel, they can legally pull you over for going 1mph over the limit...most only pull over above 10-15mph.  For getting it calibrated just ask the auto repair store if they can run it or if they know a place where you can.

  6. In my city, you can almost always get away with 5 over because everyone drives that at least. The only way you usually get pulled for that is if they see something else they are interested in and there is another reason they want to check you out such as you look suspicious. If they pulled and cited everyone for 5 over, the courts would be flooded. Most judges will reduce 5 over anyway. If you drive the exact speed limit, everyone will be running over you and you will look suspicious anyway. Just never slow down quickly right in front of an officer and never ever make the first right after they pull behind you, even if that is your turn. Most of the time they will pull you for that because they think you have something to hide.

  7. There is not a standard on how many miles an hour over the speed limit an officer can allow.  It is entirely at the discretion of the officer.  Personally, when it comes to highways, I allow 15 miles an hour over the limit before I stop a car.  However, this is my personal choice and does not reflect the choice of other officers.  Some officers have an expected amount of citations that they are required, by there department, to issue per month.  Therefor, those officers are not going to be so lenient.

  8. Calabrate your own speed this way

60 MPH is one mile per min.

Start at a odometer reading of 0, start your watch, in one minute your should have moved one mile.
