Do countries in the EU not use checks?

Question

It seems, the US in one of few remaining countries utilizing checks as a widely accepted form of payment, e.g as payroll or at retail establisments. Will the U.S follow suite?

I was looking at the Bank of Ireland wedsite and it looks like they are still using checks.
