Actually the cows over in Japan from which the famous "kobe beef" comes from are given Japanese beer, and deep tissue massages, to help encourage their meat to develop its characteristic marbling and texture.

Compared to that, I don't see how California can claim it has "happy cows"...

As I mentioned above, the taste of Kobe is due to the intricate way in which the fat is marbled in the beef. This is a genetic trait rather than a result of diet or treatment. Still, some small Japanese farms include massage and beer in their cow's regimen, but it's hard to get a straight answer as to why...

Beer: The few small farms in Japan that feed their cows beer or sake, probably do so to nourish the cows and induce hunger during the humid season when the cows are less interested in eating and/or to help the cows maintain a healthy amount of microbes in their large stomach.

I have heard that as well. It appears that alcohol is a good energy source and perhaps why cows always has that dumb-drunk on their face.

Even in Texas, one rarely sees cattle in saloons anymore.

However, if someone were to pour a beer in a feed pail, and place the pail in front of the bovine, I feel sure it would be consumed.
