I've been to all sorts of websites and none of them mention a bite causing septicemia like Komodo dragons bite does. Hardly think they would leave that fact out, but maybe.

  1. Most of the Varanids (the family of monitor lizards) have similar bacteria laden mouths.  The goanna of Australia is particularly known to have nasty bites that often get infected.  According to the legends of many Australian aboriginal groups, their bite does not heal for 100 years.

More recently, it has been discovered that almost all the Varanids, and many other groups of lizards actually do produce toxins which are delivered with their bite.  They don't have specialized venom glands like snakes, but there are now hundreds of species of lizards which are recognized as venomous - contrary to the long held belief that the gila monster and beaded lizard are the only venomous lizards.

So it turns out that the nasty bite of the Komodo dragon is not due solely to septicemia, but that they actually do produce a rather large dose of true toxin that is introduced with the bite as well.
