  1. Good Question; Look at BBC news now! One sunk in Santorini

  2. Not since the Titanic.

  3. its a possibilitie but very improbable because the tech that the cruise lines have on board constantly monitoring the ships statis.  so it can happen but i would not worry about it happening because its highly improbable

  4. Very unlikely you would ever sink one of them.  Even if they would start to go down there are plenty of life boats for everyone and they make everyone come to a safety meeting to learn how to put on life jackets and where to go in case of emergency.  They are very safe...

  5. There are known cruise ship that have sank (1965 November 13th. Bermudas, Nassau, off the coast: Panamanian registered cruise ship "Yarmouth Castle" caught fire and sank; 89 people died) but the cruise ships today (unlike the Titanic) have enough lifeboats to accomodate ALL the passengers.

To attempt to ease your mind, I have been on several cruises and one of the drills (shortly after the ship pulls out of port) is to have all the passengers go up on deck to a designated area, with life jackets on. This is your station and in the event of any emergency you'll go there, board a smaller boat and be removed from the ship. In each boat are supplies for the passengers and radio equipment to contact assistance/track your craft so in short order another ship will be there to pick you up.

Unlike movies such as the Poseidon, the ship will not turn over and sink immediately. You should have ample time to remove yourself to a safe area and to be rescued.

My daughter and I were on the Ecstacy which caught fire off Miami in July '98. Everyone just put on their life jackets, went up on the deck and in this case where we were only a few miles out of Miami, rode back into port. We were surrounded by fireboats whose personel were fighting the fire on the return to the port. The coast guard was there and except for a few passengers who suffered from smoke inhalation, all was well.

Later in November, she and I took our cruise that had been cut short and enjoyed every moment of it. The food is fabulous, the entertainment wonderful, and a good time was had by all.

So rest your mind, take your trip, and enjoy. The crew will take care of you and make it a cruise to remember.
