Sam and Mary each owned one-half stock in a printing company. Sam sold 2/5 of his stock to Mary. What fractional part of the printing business does Mary now own?

  1. Sam = Mary (at least as far as stocks go), so Mary owns 50% to start and so does Sam

    Sam sells 40% of his 50%.  This means 20% of the total (0.50 * 0.40). Sam now owns 30% and Mary now owns 70%.
