  1. darwin's philosophy does not have much scientific backing but he is still a rock star ..... a scientific version of obama

  2. Darwin did not give rise to both concepts.  Biogeography's basic principals were independantly developed by a contemporary of his who Darwin asked to be a co-author of On the Origin of Species.  Natural Selection (Darwin's major contribution) is a process.  Biogeography is a set of regularities which are results of that process.  They are different aspects of the same process - just like Darwin' Natural Selection and Mendel's Genetics - independently discovered by very different people - but essentially different ways of describing the same component of reality.

  3. There is no contradiction. Islands generally have many species of plants and animals that are endemic. Yet, as Darwin described, most island species are closely related to species from the nearest mainland or a neighboring island. He explained this observation by suggesting that islands are colonized by species from the nearest mainland. These colonists eventually give rise to new species as they adapt to their new environments. FYI - E.O. Wilson is another biologist worth looking into regarding biogeography.

Saying Darwin's "philosophy does not have much scientific backing but he is still a rock star ..... a scientific version of obama" has nothing to do with answering the question. There is plenty of scientific backing if you choose to look and put aside your personal opinion.

  4. How could they? Darwin gave rise to both concepts.

  5. The environment forced many species to evolve and adapt.  Natural barriers that prevent the same species from interacting with each other, such as the formation of a cavern, lake or other natural barrier, can cause the same species to adapt and evolve differently in two seperate geographic areas, even when they have a barrier only a few hundred yards apart.
