Do data cd's/dvd's play in dvd players?

i'm trying to burn a video to a dvd and i was going to burn it as a data cd. if i do, will it play in my dvd player? if not, how should i save it in order to play it in my dvd player? any help would be greatly appreciated!

It has to be in a DVD format. check if your DVD player will play DVD+R or DVD-R or neither or both. then look here.
