Do dentists use sleeping gas when doing a route canal?

im going to the dentist 2morrow and im terrified of going to the dentist and of needles, i have a cavity that my last dentist filled in but he didnt do a good job and under the filling my cavity came back and part of my tooth fell off so now when i eat it hurts really bad if food gets stuck in it so i think im going to get a route canal does anybody know if they can use sleeping gas when they do it?

Don't worry about a thing.

I lot candy, and dont like to brush my teeth.

So what do I get.?

I get tons and tons of cavity's.

They don't hurt.

and The needle look big. but thats only bcuz they need it big to control.

All dentists use novacaine if you request it.  Not all dentists are set up with gas so you need to ask first if he can do it.  I just had the novacaine when I had a root canal and it went fine but if you are too frightened to be awake then make sure your dentist can give you gas.  Otherwise go to another dentist that uses gas.

No you will be awake for a root canal. you shouldn't feel anything (sometimes you might feel pressure or whatever) once the area has been deadened. The needle don't hurt, not really. I have had a few root canals and only one of them hurt extremely bad and that is because he never froze my mouth properly! that was quickly stopped soon as I jumped out of the chair crying. I had two more after that and one I never felt at all, it was like a normal filling being done and have had no trouble with that tooth since, the other was complicated because I had a sever infection and abscess so that had to be taken care of first and the infection is what hurt (turns out I had a very crappy dentist who never even finished the root canal though and now it is three year later and my dentist is going to go back in and finish the root canal and cap the tooth for me)

Honestly they are not half as bad as TV makes them out to be and the needle is nothing. The dentist will put a gel on your gum where he is going to inject the needle and that will take the edge off because it is a numbing gel. The needle pinches sort of. It hurts a lot more if you build it up in your mind and are all tense. Just try and relax, hold onto the arm of the chair and close your eyes, it will be over with before you know it! Tell your dentist your fears and they will work ith you to squash them.

Although we commonly use the word "Novacaine" to describe dental anesthesia, no dentist uses that anymore: they commonly use Lidocaine, Septocaine, Articaine/Polocaine called local anesthesia (where you get an injection in the mouth).

"Laughing gas" is called Nitrous Oxide and is commonly used in dental practices to relax the patient and create a mild analgesia (dulls the pain but doesn't take it away fully) and some offices will give you nitrous if you request it then while you are relaxed will give you the local anesthesia. It is amazing how much the mental process plays in if the patient is expecting a great deal of pain they tense up, get stressed out and make it more of an ordeal than it really is. Most patients find it is really not as bad as they anticipated.

Some dentists will do conscious oral sedation where they give you a pill and although you don't lose consciousness (they can ask you to turn your head etc and you can react and comply) but you are kind of out of it. This requires you to have a driver bring you and take you home.

The last option is IV sedation where a nurse starts an IV in your arm and puts you under - not as deep as general anesthesia like when you go for a surgery at the hospital though. This is not usually an option for a standard root canal but some dental offices offer it - I wouldn't recommend it unless the patient had such an intense phobia it prohibited having the work done at all as in my opinion it's a little bit of overkill for a routine root canal procedure.

Call your dental office if you are feeling nervous - they may be able to prescribe you one or two valium tablets and call it into your pharmacy so you can pick it up tonight and take the tablets an hour before your appointment. Some dentists don't like to do this but some may if you were really experiencing a lot of stress and worry. Good luck!

I've never heard of sleeping gas, but they may use laughing gas to distract you while they put the IV in. After the needle is in, you won't know the difference because you'll be asleep and when you wake up the needle won't be in you anymore.
