Question:

Do dependents have to enroll themselves in Tricare after the AD soldier submits the info to DEERS?

My husband just left for basic training. He called today and said he had finished all the paperwork for DEERS. I read that the soldier is automatically enrolled in Tricare Prime but the dependents need to enroll in Tricare on their own. Is this true or was he able to enroll all of us when he filled it out? He wasn't sure. Also, when does our coverage begin, and what is the next step in order to see a dr? I am 4 months pregnant and need to go very soon. Thank you

  1. Yes, the active duty person is automatically enrolled but dependants are not.

  2. You will have to enroll in tricare as you are not automatically enrolled. Contact your tricare region to get yourself enrolled. You will then be assigned a Primary Care manager. At that point, you make your appointment with your doctor. Let the tricare rep know you are pregnant so they can make sure to assign you an OBGYN.

  3. Call Tricare directly and get the correct information.

  4. You need to call tricare yourself. There is more than one kind, standard, prime, remote. They all depend on your situation and how far you live from an army facility. You do have to enroll yourself though.

Just to let you know, you need a military id. The id is your insurance card. Don't wait for the little paper card with most insurances..yours is different now.

It can be confusing in the beginning, call for yourself and you can print out the forms or they can fax them to you.

I love tricare, I have standard. I pick my own docs and need no referrals.

  5. When entered into DEERS you are automatically enrolled into Tricare Standard.  For this there is a yearly deductible (about $200) and a co-pay when you are seen.  you must be seen by someone who has been APPROVED by Tricare, not just accepts them.

When you get your military ID card then you can change to Tricare prime in which there is no co-pay or yearly deductible.  You are then seen at a Military Treatment Facility (MTF) or get a referral for out in town at a civilian.  You either have to go to the closest base/reserve center or do it online.

The Standard starts immediately.  With Prime if you are enrolled before the 20th of the month then it starts up the 1st of the month, if you go after the 20th then it is the following month..(August 19th it starts on September 1st... August 23rd you don't have it until October 1st).  During that time you are still on Standard.

You can also register for United Concordia which is dental care.  It is $12 for a single or $29 for family per month.  This covers 2 free cleanings, 1 xrays per year.  Then a percentage on all work done.

  6. go to the website below. is where you will want to look the website will answer any questions you have and if you want you can contact them by phone or email. But you do need to enroll yourself or have your husband go through the proper channels to do it for you
