Do diferent engines make diferent sounds even if they have the same exaust set up?

2002 mustang gt 4.6 V8, 2002 Trans AM V8, Camaro SS ,Dodge Hemmi, 2006 Pontiac GTO etc all whith the same headers off road x pipe and 40 series flow masters. which sound better how do some people can tell which it is just by the sound like mustangs sound diferent than camaros and so on.

  1. Different cams.  Each engine due to its design, likes different air flow for maximum power.  This is controlled by the cam.  Since each engine has a different cam, each engine has a different air flow and a different exhaust flow causing each to have a different sound even if they have the same exhaust system.  The cam's duration (intake and exhaust), overlap, lift, timing, and firing order all contribute to the sound.


  2. yes different cars rev different especially small blocks ,you can usually tell the difference in a dodge or a ford or a chevy by the way they rev,sometimes though its kind of hard if they have the same set up,i have mistaken a few that weren't what i thought they was,good luck.

  3. I believe all engine's have there on sound ,It's do to there cam set-up.You can always change the sound by the exaust that you have on the vehicle. You just get to learn the different sounds they make.
