There are now generally two types of engine oil on sale, Petrol Engine & Diesel Engine. Would it do harm if one was added to the opposite type of engine, ie Diesel Oil put in a Petrol Engine?

  1. best oil is put out by hydrotex.com

    they will tell you

  2. You should always use the correct oil as petrol and diesel engines have different requirements

  3. There are a couple of different additives in diesel oil that may cause trouble with your catalytic converter. Do to the high bearing loads some diesel oils have elevated levels of zinc and phosphorus. Most diesel oils come in viscosity's that aren't suitable for modern gasoline motors. Most are either 15W-40 or 5W-40. Caterpillar suggests 5W-40.

In gasoline engines it's important to remember that most engine wear occurs during cold starts. Ideally low first viscosity numbers 0W-30 or 5W-30 allows the oil pump to force the oil with greater volume to critical moving parts faster than higher viscosity oils. Light weight oil cools frictional surfaces faster and more efficiently. Lightweight oil adsorbs heat from the water-jackets in the block and cylinder heads more efficiently.

Modern racing engines use extreemly low viscosity oils. Visit: Joe Gibbs Racing oil to review what they use. If you don't have time to review the Gibbs team uses 0W for qualifing laps. 0W-20 while racing on super speedways using restrictor plates and 5W-20 when they unleash their 870 horsepower motors in non-restricted races.

Stick to the recommended type and viscosity oil your handbook calls for. Gasoline engine oils have little or no zinc and phosphorus to damage converters.

  4. yes they do

the bottle usasly has a specification s follwoed by a letter for gasoline engines

for diesels there are specfication c followed by a letter

  5. I know someone who put diesel into a regular gas engine and it starting smoking white smoke out of the tailpipe. It really stinks and smells like something is burning. The car finally wouldn't start. Had to tow it to the dealer where they had to suck out all the diesel. Why do you think on the dashboard it says unleaded fuel or diesel fuel only. It theres for a reason because anything else can ruin your engine.

  6. that depends on weather there both synthetic or mineral basses oils as the 2 DONT mix....

  7. you cannot put diesel in a petrol engine vice versa if you do your engine will cease up. you will need to get it pumped or maybe a new engine!!!

  8. If you buy a brand new car, you could drain the oil and use diesel oil in a petrol car, this is not recommended for secondhand engines as diesel oil contains detergents and could pick up debris from previous old oil and block the oilways

  9. Nowadays there are many different grades of oil on the market. It is much more important to ensure you have the correct grade of oil (15w/40, 10w/30 etc) than whether or not is is suitable for diesel engines.

Diesel oil has detergents and dispersants added to deal with the effects of burning diesel fuel, that is why if you check the dipstick of a diesel engine the oil will be black.

I suggest you ask your local motor factor what oil is recommended by the manufacturer for your car and stick with it. Don't forget to change the oil at the recommended intervals as well!.
