  1. Yes because they use different amounts of light to photosynthesize.

  2. Yes, some do better in the shade and some do better in direct sun. It just the way they are, some like wet locations other likes dry!

  3. Yes

It is just like different animals need different amounts of water, food, sleep, ect...

Different plants need different amounts of light because they are different. Don't go on a religious trip but this is what most will call evolution.

For instance cave moss will need far considerably less light than grass because it lives where there is little light and it has adapted to not having light. Different plants will need different light depending on what they have adapted to naturaly in nature. Another example is the rainforest. The tall trees get lots of light because they rise above the canopy but the plants at ground level have adapted to getting little light because the canopy shades them and they dont get much light.

  4. Yes - they evolved in different ecosystems.

  5. different types. no

    different amounts. yes

  6. Hi Sarah,

With regard to photosynthesis, no, different plants do not need different types of light.  They all use the blue and red spectrum of sunlight to stimulate special cells (mostly located in their leaves) to produce their food.

However, there are some plants that do not use sunlight to produce food.  These plants have other means of obtaining their necessary nutrients; such as, from another plant or from the decaying plant matter found in the ground.

Different plants do have different needs regarding the amount of light required to produce enough energy (food) for the plant to exist.  These different needs are evolutionary adaptations that have resulted from the conditions in which the plant has evolved.  An example of this is that small plants which evolved in dense forests have evolved to require less sunlight for the production of its energy.

    I hope this helps.
