Will I really save money in the long run?

The issue I have with my AC right now is that it will not turn off by itself.

Will it help me with this issue?

Its fairly old and the way it is controlled is by sliding the temperature to the level you "think" is appropriate.

Also how do I know if my thermostat is compatible?

  1. Verdugo: Yes.. it will help you save money because the simple reason that it does what the other t-stat don't do for you yet and thats turning off your ac unit. You need to get a 7-day programmable t-stat. Read the instructions and then get the settings right. Then you can start saving money too. How old is your ac unit? You might wanna change it to new High rating on SEER for efficiency and will also pay for itself too.

  2. Aside from the A/C question, I can tell you that the digital thermostats will save you money.  I have mine set in winter to keep different zones at a comfort level when they are occupied, and much lower when they are not.  This saved me a lot of fuel this past year.  I actually found that I liked sleeping with the house cool, but it warmed up for me when I got up for work.  I love it.

  3. HVAC Tech.: I am from the old school,if it ain't broke, don't fix it! There are batteries in the digital units, they have a method to programming that few (if any) people can comprehend. And because the unit won't do what you think you "told" it to do, causes need for service call. Give me an old Honeywell or white rogers every time. Very simplicity itself. The more complicated a thing is the more it cost to fix. Remember when we could tune up our cars at home? Now you have to "roll the engine just to change the plugs!

  4. Digital t-stats give you the ability to set accurate times for your a/c to turn on /off. and will be accurate within half of a degree vs your current one that is 1-3 degrees off. make sure that you label the wiring as you remove it from the old one, Hopefully it is color coded

    red- hot 24volts

    green- blower/fan

    white- heat

    yellow- cooling

But since you mentioned it is a trane they use numbers so refer to color code . these are industry standards
