Do direct planets ever go in retrograde?

no belief required - so if Mercury is in Cancer in the tenth house direct, when would Mercury go retrograde for me?

I'm assuming that you mean planets which are direct in the birthchart. Yes, they can go retrograde through progression, but the birthchart itself does not change.

The moon is never retrograde, though.

It depends on when it goes retrograde in the year after you were born. In progression, each day after you were born is taken as representing a year of your life, so if mercury went retrograde 10 days after you were born, then you'd have progressed mercury retrograde when you were 10 years old until whenever Mercury moved direct again.
