  1. why are you planning to go to Mexico to do whatever ?

think less about Mexican drug laws and more about NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS

  2. no, it's not legal to "self prescribe."

also, just as in the US (hello??  hollywood starlets??) you can find a dishonest doctor, that i am sure of.  but for every one of them, there are several more respectable, honest doctors who are concerned about people's well being, and not making fast cash.  that doctor could lose their license!

PS...the average doctor visit IS around 20 bucks.

  3. Not true.

There are, in fact, some meds you can buy in mexican drugstores without prescription that you cann't in USA; but also there are drugs that are absolutly controlled and drugstores won't sell if you don't give a prescription; and they must keep the prescription with the license number of the doctor to show it to health authorities.

Just, the laws are different. You may buy many antibiotics (not all), aspirin, paracetamol (tylenol and similars) or anticonceptives, without prescriptions. But you cann't buy some stronger antibiotics, psicotropics (prozac, oxycontin and others), and others.

  4. There are some dishonest MDs that may write a prescription for many drugs, but there are some substances that they may not give you a prescription for. It is prohibited to self prescribe, the prohibition is never enforced and you may get a lot of prescription drugs, as antibiotics, with no prescription at all.

  5. The self prescription you're talking about is: "I've diarrhea and I know that a lomotil will stop it, so I will go to the pharmacy and buy a box........." .... or you have a bad throat infection and you go buy Ciprofloxacin because that's what the Dr. prescribed the last time you had the same disease. Yes, this DOES happen in Mexico and it IS legal..... those meds are sold without prescription / over the counter and anybody can go to the drugstore and buy them, no big deal and no one is responsible for that but the person who is doing it (and who is taking the risk of taking a medicine which is no appropriate for their disease).

The other part of your question is not true. at least I don't know of any Dr. who has handed a prescription for an addict to be able to get their restricted meds easily for money. I'm not saying it's impossible and I suppose this can happen here or anywhere else in the world.... but no, a Dr. won't prescribe heavy drugs out of nothing or becuz they're being bribed, but only when they are really necessary for the patient.

  6. it is as ture as the stereotypes you hear from any other country.

I live in Mexico and I can tell you it is not that easy, if a Doctor is caught giving away prescriptions like that he wil lose his license and probably go on trail.

Yes, medicine is cheaper, yes there may be some cases of Doctors who risk it. But in general medical services are quite good, we have modern well-equiped hospitals.

  7. It is true that the rules for acquiring some prescription drugs are not as hard as in the US so it'll be easier to get a prescription for them in Mexico, and it's also true that not all drugs have the same restrictions than in the US, you might find some over the counter drugs in Mexico that you can only get by prescription in the US.

It's true also that there are some dishonest MD, but just think about it would you trust your health to that!  But the truth is that for a heavy drug you must probabbly will need to have the prescription with you if you are looking to buy it from a reputable store, I wouldn't risk it otherwise, you might just end up with a bag of m&m's!! Oh and unless you have a doctor's Rx with its hand writen signature and certifying codes, the prescription will not be valid, so I believe self prescription is not allowed.

But what is true is that doctors in Mexico like preventions instead of fixing an already existing problem, so if you find an MD you are comfortable with in Mexico and he gets to know your medical history (and caracter) he might be inclined to help you with what you need.  And also, some drugs are cheaper in Mexico.  Hope it Helps!!

  8. What you say is not true.  The country that over prescribes the most is USA.  You might be able to get some drugs at some pharmacies.  Try at the wrong pharmacy and you probably will land in Jail.  In the USA Dr's hand out drugs like candy.  When I had my wisdom teeth taken out in Mexico I wasnt even given one pain killer.  I got into a really stupid car accident here in the USA and I was given like 50 strong pain pills.

i also heard that in mexico it is legal to "self prescribe".  This might mean the fact that some of the basic basic medicines that here in the USA are not over the counter like stupid creams and anti imflamatories in Mexico are over the counter. In that case YES. But if you go and say I need some Oxycotin for my pain killer addiction, you might end up in Jail.

Drs in Mexico tend to offer treatment and tend to cure their patients more holistically, Here in Ammurrika Drs tend to offer quick fixes that will make you forget about the bigger problem but they will keep the patient comming back. Or keep you sick untill you need surgery.

The USA Medical System is good, but its so screwed up.
