Hi, yes b*****s have periods unless they're spay. the period usually comes at their 8 month mark and lasts about 2 weeks. they are usually sad looking (like most of us women when its that time) and whine too. They want to be held and rubbed.

They especially like their tummy rubbed. you can put a hot (not too hot you dont wanna burn them) towel on their stomachs to ease some of their pain. They have doggie pads so they wont bleed everywhere.

after their first heat (period) they will go back to their normal selves.

BE CAREFUL NOT TO ALLOW THEM TO l**k THEMSELVES (yuk!) while they're on it because they WILL TRY TO clean themselves.

keep a good eye on them, and sometimes they might not want to eat food outta their bowl so you may want to hand feed them. they're like lil babies around that time. they will go back into heat a year later i believe. if you plan to breed her, you should wait until the second heat. she'll be all grown up then and ready for some doggie style. lol hope that helps. i have a chi shih tzu. designer breed. so i know because my vet told me all this. thnks

yes female dogs do get their period.it depends on which kind of spay she gets to be sure if she will have her period or not.if she had her ovaries taken out then she won't have her period ever agian.

Yes and no.  Many, but not all, female dogs do have bloody vaginal discharge when they are in heat.  But it is not a menstrual cycle; a female dog actual goes through something called an estrous cycle, and instead of shedding her uterine lining outside of her body like humans do, it is reabsorbed by her uterus.  Animals that have estrous cycles are sexually active only during the estrous cycle, whereas animals that have menstrual cycles are sexually active at any time.  That's how you can tell whether or not an animal has an actual period; dogs go into heat and are not sexually receptive at any other time, and therefore they have an estrous cycle, and no period.

However, SOME (not all) canines do have bloody vaginal discharge during their cycles; it is not a period, per se, and actually has nothing to do with the lining of the uterus (it is obvious, if you think about it, since it is happening during her heat, when she is ready to conceive, whereas in humans our periods are happening at the low point in our cycle when we most likely can NOT conceive).  It also does not happen in all dogs, or it is so minute an amount that the dog cleans herself and it is never seen.  

But NO dog who is spayed, regardless of the process used (tubal ligation, or hysterectomy, which is the most common and least expensive of the two) should have this discharge.  Her hormone levels in either case should preclude the heat cycle -- which is the point of spaying -- and therefore she should not have discharge.  If she does, she should see a vet, because it could be the result of an internal injury that needs treatment, or an indication that a tubal ligation reversed itself (which it can, just like in humans).
