Question:

Do dogs have the ability to smile?

Most people will answer that they think dogs can smile. I think so too. However, I wonder if more definitive studies have been done. My golden retriever has the ability to charm you out of whatever it is she thinks she wants. Just sits there, looks at you intently, and what I perceive to be - smiling. Anybody?

  2. DEFINITELY!!!!!! my dog snoop always smiles! when there food around ive never seen anyone cheese so much!

  3. I had a husky/shepherd mix, and I KNOW that dogs can smile because of him.  Whenever he was happy about something, he would tilt his head slightly back, have a happy pant, and would get these little wrinkles on the sides of his mouth like we get when we smile.  He wouldn't smile all the time, but if he was really happy, or if we were having a great time playing together, then he would laugh like that.  Even his eyes would get scrunched a little bit, like when people laugh.

  4. YES

  5.     They give you a submissive grin which to people is a smile and serves the same purpose, they are  usually happy and excited when it "smiles". I have owned a Dobe who smiles plus know a Miniature Pinscher and a Viszla mix who both smile.

  6. yes they do... if they develop the muscles to have lip like muscles or some thing.

  7. My dog shows me his teeth, which I believe is a form of smiling.

yes. APBT's Are known for the smile!

  9. Dogs have a DEFINITE smile....no, I cannot quote studies...

However, I own 4 dogs....only 1 "smiles"...and that is not looking at you intently....and what you perceive to be a smile...

That is an actual "baring of the teeth" (but not in anger)...My little Border Collie "smiles" at me every day.....SHe bares her teeth but her eyes are soft and she want some loving....some people think she is growling or "making nasty" but she hasn't a mean bone in her body.

I groom dogs for a living.....I would say that in actuality, maybe only 5% of dogs actually "smile"....it's great...most comon among GOldens, Border COllies, and Labs (but that is only my personal experience.
