Do doors unlock at the same time the air bags open?

I have a Ford Expedition. The doors lock automatically when driving. If I were to need assistance after an accident, will the door automatically unlock so passerby could get in the car to come to my aid? Or vice versa -- do other car doors unlock if I were the first to arrive at an accident and wanted to come to the aid of a victim?

I know that I could find my tire iron and break a window, but it would be much quicker to be able to open the door. It would also be quicker to exit a vehicle if the doors unlocked automatically .

  1. No they will not unlock after an accident.....

  2. i would think so.  i know that with hyundais the doors unlock in an accident-  its probably a standard srs feature.

  3. If you're in an accident, you're safer if the doors stay locked.  That way there's less chance of a door flying open, and allowing you or your passengers to be ejected.  This is why your doors lock automatically in the first place.

For this reason, no engineer is going to design a door to automatically unlock in an accident.  The danger isn't necessarily over by the time the airbags deploy.  There's no way for the vehicle's computer system to determine when it's actually safe to unlock your doors.
