Question:

Do dryer sheets repel pests like mice or bats?

I have heard that dryer sheets will keep mice out an area like a basement. Unfortunately, I have a small bunch of bats living between the walls of my house, and am seeking a way of driving them out without grossly damaging the wall(s) or killing the bats.

  1. No.

You need to get them out because as you know that guano smells worse than cat urine. It will permeate your walls, rotting them and you will need to tear walls down.

    You have a few options:

    Hire a professional.

I hear you can "smoke" them out.

They leave at night, be super ready, and as soon as they leave for feeding SEAL their entrance so that they cannot fly back inside.

So be a detective and watch at what time they leave at night and at what time they return. Have friends/relatives/neighbors in position when the time comes to be ready to seal their entryway.

If they are coming in through the chimney, cover the top opening with chicken wire and on top use the material used for screen doors. Wrap about 1/3 down the chimney, wrap with wire.

SEAL all potential openings BEFORE you attempt to seal their entry/exit once they leave to feed. That way they cannot sneak in through another opportune opening.

So...get those ladders in position, clean the night goggles, get the chicken wire and staples ready...okay, go!

  2. Someone once told me to hang a bat house somewhere in the yard.  Once they find it, they'll move.

  3. never heard of that, will ward off many other pests, like chiggers and ticks
