  1. It is up to you, either option of bedding is fine as long as it is safe for use with small animals (check the packaging).

It usually works out cheaper to buy woodshavings as you can buy them in bulk where as soft bedding comes in smaller, more expensive packets.

A lot of people use woodshavings over the base of the cage and soft bedding in the sleeping area to add some comfort.

  2. no, there is a range of whats good and bad. there are things like recycled and kind of processed to make a soft bedding. then you have the products like carefresh. that is what i use for my hamster and gerbils. it does get dusty. I would suggest buying Aspen shavings and mix some newspapers that you don't use and maybe even some carefresh. on the other hand, woolly beddings will work fine also. if you mix the beddings, then you get a mix that will be easier for the hamster to make a nest out of and it will last longer on your part.

  3. Hello,

well in my opinion i would not go near wood shavings. This is because hamsters are very sensitive to it and may get an allergic reaction or an eye or just an infection. What i use for my special hamster is Carefresh bedding. This bedding is very soft and hypoallergenic. I would definitely go with Carefresh.

    Hope I Helped

  4. they dont have to have it but i would not recommend woolly bedding either as 1 of my mice got tangled up in it try plain paper or toilet roll make sure that its not sented or coloured try that instaed and the paper has no ink on it mke sue it doesnt ok hope this helps

  5. They can have both. I use aspen shavings for mine, because pine and cedar can get stuck in their fur, and clog their respitory systom (it means it can kill them). Carefresh bedding (wooly bedding) is a good choice too.

  6. They don't need wood shavings, I had a chinese dwarf hamster and I can't remember using wood shavings much. Of course it might help to have it anyway, but I know mine slept in woolly bedding.

  7. No, hamsters do not need wood shavings. However, if you plan on putting wood shavings in your hamster cage, never use pine or cedar shavings, use only aspen shavings. Pine / cedar is allergic to hamsters and can cause respiratory infections due to the fine dust content in them.

By woolly bedding, if you are referring to the cottony texture kind of bedding, please do not use that too. The threads in the texture can be chewed on by the hamster causing impacted pouches and intestinal problems that would require a vet's intervention and surgery.

Always use only paper based bedding like Carefresh or wood shavings like aspen shavings. You can also use ripped toilet paper. Make sure that the toilet paper is untreated, unbleached and non fragrant. Don't throw away the empty toilet roll tubes, give them to your hamster as they make good toys for the hamsters to play and gnaw.

This site would give you an idea of which safe commercial bedding to buy for your hamster -

  8. My hamster loves the recycled paper bedding and does not care for wood shavings.  I would choose what the pet store uses as it will make your hamster more comfortable.

  9. no the wooly bedding is fine, too. just ask at the pet store to make sure the brand is safe for hamsters:)
