  1. There is no record of any person every being "swallowed up" by an earthquake, but I do believe it happened to a cow.  There may or may not be cracks along the ground caused by an earthquake, it all depends on the depth of the earthquake and whether or not the rupture made it to the surface. If there are breaks, they will usually look like "scarps" (small cliffs maybe 3 or 4 feet high) or "mole tracks" (breakage along the ground that looks like a gopher made a tunnel right under the surface).  It would be unusual for any sort of chasm to open up.
