Do economists work at the state level?

I know there are tons of interesting jobs at the federal and international level for economists but not sure what economists do, if at all, at the state level.

I can confidently say yes to this one. I worked for the State Government for many years. Economists are important at this level because they analyse important data regarding performance at state level.
