It depends on how old the plant is.  You can order bare root plants (or buy a plant at a nursery) that are already a couple of years old.  They'll probably produce a few berries, but not as many as a plant that's been growing in your yard for a few years.  If you start a plant from seed, though, it'll probably take several years before it's large enough to produce fruit.  You'll also need to plant at least one each of two different varieties of elderberry in order to get good pollination of the berries.

    I wouldn't count on a very large harvest the first year or two after planting bare root or nursery-bought plants.
