  1. Hey There is right...

Electronic kits sound totally different than acoustic drum kits.

I've played on both, but I still love that "boomy & feel" sound

you get from an acoustic drum kit. To me, acoustic kits sound much more powerful & large on all sides soundwise. I personally wouldn't buy an electronic kit myself, but I encourage others to sit down on one and see it for yourself to see if you like it or not. Some drummers use them and some others don't...simple as that.

  2. It all depends on what you are using them for.  By no means will anything Electronic beat acoustic natural sounds, But for this instance they serve better for practicing at late hours, or if you are looking for a more professional sound for the use of a home studio.

See when you record acoustic drum kits you need to individually Mic the bass drum, snare drum, all the toms, have 2 overhead Mic's for the cymbals.  This is what you would need to do for a show and in a recording studio.

For the studio all the Mic's capture the sound of the individual drum of the acoustic drum kit allowing the producer to add effects, mixing power, so that the producer can get the fine quality that you hear in today's professional CD's.

Now the Electric Drum Kit is something that you just plug into your line in of your computer verse one Mic in the room. The concept here if you were to record at your home studio would be to fine the settings you like and record the individual drums separately so you can have the same mixing effect as a producer would with the individual tracks from an acoustic set.

Now an days acoustic set players your things called Trigger's to have a more synthetic powerful boom added to their bass drum to get that power sound heard more typically in metal than anywhere else.

I hope I helped you out alot! Take care

  3. I'm not a drummer, by any means, but I do listen to quite a bit of music, and hang around a few musicians. I find that the electric drums sound hollow and tinny compared to the standard set. Depending upon the equipment, they can sound like another instrument all together, like a keyboard with the drum sound selected.

  4. Well I can only assume by the answers here that everyone is talking about cheap electronic drums. Good electronic drums use samples, not oscillators, for the sounds. Basically with a good drum brain they have taken top of the line drums in a top notch studio with the best sound engineers and mics available to create these samples. They are going to sound much better than what you will ever get out of an acoustic set. Of course if you amplify this with 20 watts and a 12" speaker it won't sound as good as an acoustic kit, but if you put both in a large venue running through a PA the top notch electronic set will sound much better.  Cheaper electronic kits do sound like c**p.

  5. i'm the proud owner of a yamaha 130xl drum kit,the newer drum kits come in a huge variety of sounds, the one that i have can be customized..like i can change to depth or speed of the sound of my snare,toms,hi-hats,ride,crash,splash,chi... and bass drums...it all depends on how ya want ya kit to sound..like i play death metal music so my kit sounds more vibrate and tight...of course ya could never get the sound of a acoustic set though like (tama, zildzian, sona etc)...thats why they called it an electric kit,any sound digital is so called unnatural really..and drum feel is different too...but hey...i live in an apartment block so i'd rather have an electric kit than a acoustic one coz i can play at anytime of the day and not wake the neighbors considering i can plug it into headphones.. cheers
