Do electricity prices flucuate based on time of day?

Is it common for electricity to be priced differently depending on time of day for residential owners? If so how can I be billed in this way? thanks

  1. The state I live in in Australia has a special nightly rate called off peak so its cheaper

    We are billed what ever the meter reads it also pays to learn how to read it


  2. No, not for a residential house.  That would require a timer on your meter so that at certain hours it would measure the consumption.  Some industrial plants have a dual system and the utility gives them a break when demand is down.

    Install a solar system and sell power to the utility during the day and use some of it back at night.  I know of at least one resident in my town who makes money doing that.

  6. That depends on where you live and what company supplies your power. Contact your local power company to see if they do this.

  7. in Ontario we have 'smart meters' installed on the homes for the power meter during higher consumption times the power can be quite high if you use more during of peak times the price is lower,check out Ontario Hydro smart meter program
