Im fifteen and I'm studying for my GED. I know this is what I'm going to do, so I'm not asking if I should or not. I'm homeschooled on the internet because something happened at my old school and I couldn't get myself to go back. My mom is very sick and in a hospital bed at our house and Im alone taking care of her and my seven year old sister almost full time, its not a problem with me I just don't have time to do any school. I was hoping they ask WHY you dropped out?

  1. Why can't you just go to college like a typical homeschooler does... with transcripts, SAT/ACT, essays, etc, but no diploma? Of if you're not college bound, why won't you be getting a homeschool diploma? Or are you saying you're dropping out of homeschooling?

  2. Have you considered simply having your parents issue you your homeschool diploma? Homeschools are private schools. You graduate from a private school. Put that on any resumes.

Also remember that most homeschool kids end up taking college courses at your age. There is no need to go for a GED at all.  You are not a drop out.  You are in a private school.

  3. First you probably do not need a GED. If you live in Texas I can tell you a lot but, with your special situation I will bend over backwards to figure out what is the best thing for you in your state. My email is public.

I am the father of a 17 year old boy who was homeschooled and has been accepted to several IVY league colleges. Please write me with your state. Never give anybody you met over the internet your home address or phone number including me..

Take care of yourself as well as your Mom. My heart goes out to you. xoxoxo

  4. First off, I am very sorry to hear of your difficulties.  You sound like a very mature young person.

Some employers will ask why you did not "finish" school.  Some will assume that you "dropped out."  Of course, you did neither.  You completed your pre-college education in the manner that best suits you and your particular situation.  You are not a drop out.  You are not a quitter. In your situation, discussing why you chose your path will probably show you in a very good light.  Not many young people take on the responsibilities of a sick mother and younger sibling.

All the best to you and your family.

  5. they will ask you why did you drop out unless they are just being s****. and assuming, if that is the case dont let it worry you, there are more fish in the sea and go to the next employer and dont wait for them to ask you, tell them that you want to explaine why you got your ged and tell your story...be forthcoming and they will respect you for it..good luck with your mother and i just want to say i think you are to be commended for the help you are giving with your little sister that shows a lot of character

  6. When they interview  you can explain the reasons why you  had to do home schooling, Being a carer can be put on the resume on the list  of pracitical skills. They know that people are homeschooled and for all you know future employers may have been  homeschooled or dropped out of school.Best of luck with your  future.

  7. Wow, it sounds like you have a lot of responsiblity for your age.  It's great you are looking at your future too.

I think that if you have an application and wite homeschooling and GED, then the emplyer will have some ideas about why.  When you have an interview you will be able to explain your background and how it has been to your benefit, and how it has developed skills that will be useful in the job.

Best of luck to you :D
