Do energy saving bulbs damage the evironment?

They do NOT save energy because they give out less heat. Your heating system has to work harder to keep the house warm.

But energy saving bulbs use far more components to make using up the earths resorces. If you really want to save energy you should ban Christmas lights.

florescent bulbs have a small amount of mercury in them so they need to be disposed of properly.  That being said, they use about 15% of the energy of regular bulbs and last 10 times longer than regular bulbs.  So they are huge savers of the energy used in your house!

No they dont damage the environment the only way they could is if you dont dispose of them properly.

Ps. Christmas lights shouldnt be banned because they are only used once a year and without them it wouldnt be the same!

people better realize that florescent bulbs contain mercury. if they are not properly disposed of they may not be as helpful as every one thinks

I have them in every room in my home, they take a little longer to glow bright but are well worth it.

I heard they can reduce you energy bills by 4%

yes they do ,do damage to the environment, it's being proved by scientist that they are a hazard to the water table if they become broken.also they have been proved to not last as long as they stated them to last as long as they do..in Europe there trying to make manufactures label the truth on them.

what have light bulbs got to do with the heating? no they dont damage the environment , they may take a few more components to make but they last years longer than a conventional bulb , you would probably on average replace 6 or 7 ordinary bulbs before your energy saving one burnt out - how many resources are the 6 or 7 ordinary bulbs using compared to one energy saving one?

lightbulbs dotn make enough heat to make a significant differance to household heating and they are not efficient doing it for sure, just because theyre hot to touch doesnt make them a good heater

companants? please they use more metals for a start

this is liek the americans saying their pollution isnt anything to do with global warming

not being able to quantify stuff exactly doesnt dispell the reality

I'm sorry but you have got it wrong.

Energy saving light bulbs are far more efficient because the heat given out by incandescent bulbs is not always wanted and can be produced more efficiently by a proper heating system anyway.

Energy saving bulbs also last a great deal longer and so save energy and other resources that way too.

But all bulbs damage the environment to some extent, particularly if used wastefully or disposed of carelessly.

I hope this information will help you minimise your impact on the environment and save some money too.

According to Wikipedia florescent light bulbs saves much less electricity, while cutting down on polluting gasses.

In SUMMER you air conditioning system has LESS work to COOL the house. And since over half of my yearly electric use is summer A/C, these bulbs most definitely help reduce energy use and help the environment.

And even in winter the bulbs use less ELECTRICITY, so I use more NATURAL GAS to heat my house, which is a more efficient use of energy than electric heat.

The components are not a significant environmental impact compared to all the extra coal, oil and natural gas that would be needed to generate enough electricity to operate a standard incandescent bulb.

If you really believe in what you say then unplug your house.and walk every where you go.They do now more damage then the old bulbs.
