Compact fluorescent light bulbs, right now, are more efficient and " eco-wise" then anything else most consumers can get a hold of (ie. incandescent) and currently save over 2000 times their own weight in greenhouse gases.

But since my house is completely on solar / wind and we REALLY need to watch usage, every light is fitted with s***w type (typical 110v lamp socket style) LED bulbs. They emit the same luminosity (typically 45) but at only 1watt rather then a 45w compact or 10w CFL. However they usually cost twice as much as CFLs which is twice as much (or more) as compacts. Still LEDs would be the way to go by far.

  2. When I switched to CF lights, my monthly bill dropped by about 25%.

  3. Yes they do. However it depends also on how much electricity you use.

  4. DEFINITELY!

ENERGY STAR qualified light bulbs are at least three times more efficient than regular bulbs!!

Over its lifetime, one ENERGY STAR qualified light bulb eliminates the need for eight incandescent bulbs and saves you more than $30! Plus they last waaaaay longer than ordinary bulbs (7 years vs. 11 months on a regular bulb! crazy, right???!) AND they create much less heat loss!

So the additional cost of these bulbs definitely are worth it, believe me!!! They saved my family an insane amount of money since we switched all out bulbs over a couple years ago... do it!! :)

  5. not sure how much but the do require less energy so to answer your question yes

  6. Light bulbs produce light and heat. the energy star bulbs produce less heat.

In the winter, the incandescant bulbs add some heat (small amount)  to the house that otherwise would be made up in your heating bill and in the summer, the ac has to remove the added heat.

It is like saying a hybrid car is environmentally friendly, but my understanding is mining nickle for the batteries is not. Look at all sides to get the correct answers.

  7. yes they need less energy to light your home. can save about 15 to 60 dollars a month depending on how much energy you use.

  8. thats their marketing scheme....
