Question:

Do fancy tailed bettas live shorter lives than the "regular" veil tailed?

My regular veiled tailed bettas all live 4-5 years

However I have never had a crown tail or half-moon tailed betta live longer than 6 months with the exact same care....

The lady at the LFS says the fancy-tailed bettas are bred solely for looks and so they are frail....that doesn't seem reasonable to me....

But has anyone else found this to be true?

  1. i have a crown tail that has lived for 2yrs. Sometimes fish just get sick. The fancy bettas are very carefully selected to get the beste genes possible (healthwise also).

its like purebred dogs, they usually have some type of handicapp because the close breeding. Mutts are supposed to have a more varied gene pool and are supposed to have a stronger immune system but when they are bred deliberately (like in puppy mills, with unsanitary conditions and bred for quantity not quality) they can end up with major illnesses and genetic defects. Veil tail bettas are bred for quantity and not quality and so they usually get sick in teh short time in which they are transported and sold (kept in cups) but if they survive the ordeal, they can end up living for 4 yrs with stable good conditions

I know that halfmoons are more prone to fin rot and disease, they need extra special care just like purebred dogs.

  2. fancy ones can live for 4-5 years as well..I dont think that is true...but even in case of goldies..the fancies live less than a common..they could be a bit fragile but not 6 months..that is too less of a time...but yeah could be possible..I am told that fancy ones do need a little extra care than the regular ones..cos they are delicate...
