  1. It depends on the rice variety but like all plants, rice lives on the soil solution, the nutrient liquid around the roots. If you need and have standing water for the time that the rice needs it and just to the depth of the roots, then that would be all you need as a basic. If you wish to make that have more nutrition than you could add nutrients to the water or even better, raise fish in your patty, like Tilapia or other available fish in your area. Then you have two crops and free natural fertilizer. Send me an email if you need more information. I would love to here from you.

  2. A farmer doesn't have a lot of options as what to grow in swamp land. If he can control the flood, he can grow good patty rice. If he can't control the water, there are still some types of rice that he can grow, but his choices are narrowed down considerably.

  3. The choice is often between efforts to drain the soil and use it for dry land agriculture or to leave it as paddy.

My land is an ancient lake in glacial morain territory. SO we should expect I would have an option to use paddy agriculture. All I need do is block off the exit from the lake bottom.

But I do not own the whole lake bottom, and my neighbors  have spent a lot of money doing tile drainage. If I attempt to block off the drainage system they will force the issue with the Drainage Act. Drainage act takes precedence over paddy decisions. So even if I had already paddy constructs, I could be forced to drain them by my neighbors.

In our area, we do not grow rice. Our season is too short. So we do not have a good crop to make paddy agriculture viable. We do not have acidic soil so can not grow cranberries.

Years ago our farmers had to make a decision between paddy and dry land farming, and paddy will have been the wrong decision for this area.

With hotter weather that might be reversed.
