Question:

Do fast food places really add chemicals to increase appetite?

I almost never eat fast food, but a few days ago though I ate a fast food breakfast. Since then I feel, well, hungrier than usual and I'm trying to figure out why, as I'm not a particularly foody person.

Do fast food joints really add chemicals to increase appetite? Are there any legitimate studies about this?

  1. No, your body is just starving because you're not getting any nutrients from the food.  The food is high in volume, but low in nutrition.  So, although you've just eaten a whole meal, you retained very little nutrients from the food.  So, your body still thinks it's hungry.  For all the secrets and tricks of the fast food industry, check out the book Fast Food Nation.  I bet you won't eat fast food anymore.

  2. While there may be many kinds of chemical additives in fast food, an appetite booster would be useless, since, by the time you eat the food, you have already ordered.

And, having an increased appetite AFTER you've eaten, wouldn't do the restaurant any good.

It wouldn't even help them by having you order even more food during the meal, since none of the chemicals would reach your blood stream until, at least, an hour after taking them.

There is, most likely, another reason for your increased appetite.

  3. Sure, one of my first duties when I get to work is spray all the food with this spray called Appetite Enhancer!

    Just kidding :)

It is all the carbohydrates in fast food that makes you crave more.  Haven't you ever noticed that when you eat candy or chips (which also contains a lot of carbohydrates) you just want more.

  4. Its all the salt and fats in the foods that stimulate your appetite.

  5. MSG ! MSG fools you into thinking you want more. KFC is the worst!

  6. Only add MSG for flavor but additive.
