  1. yes they do i have to clean my ferrets cage like 2x per week to keep it under control but you answered my question on ferret adrenal and i really want to talk to you about it because they think he has it and they did a blood test and it wont be back for a week and I'm really scared. Hes my baby and I'm going nuts. Of course we will get him the surgery and we were also looking into a raw food diet and VIBE therapy. We love him and his sister so much. I'm scared she could have it too, but she has no symptoms. I'm also scared about insulinoma occurring because it seems like sometimes ferrets are diagnosed with both, but I haven't noticed any additional symptoms in him besides a bit more lethargy. please please please e-mail me. my email address is Hwdoulkemeenw@aol.com

  2. no not usually my moms never did as long as the cage is clean and you bath them they should be fine

  3. No, ferrets don't attract flies. I don't know why there are flies around your ferret; maybe bathe your ferret and wash their toys and bedding very thoroughly.

  4. The short answer is no, if the cage is clean then the ferret cage should not have flies.

That being said you might want to give it a big overhaul and see if you can find the source. In the many years I've had ferrets I've had a few times when my ferrets have had fly issues, not because I wasn't cleaning but because of 'extenuating' circumstances.

First take everything out of the ferret cage, dump the litter, wash all the blankets, etc. Check and see if you find anything unusual. I had one ferret that during a late stage lymphoma (not saying that's your issue, just relating the story) used to like to dunk his kibble to moisten it so it was easier to eat. Unfortunately he'd hide his 'mush' under his blankets and it would go bad by end of day. If they are doing anything funky with the food it's possible they are attracting flies.

Check the litter. Many years ago I had a natural fiber litter (I still use cellulose but at the time it was a corn litter) and got a bad batch. I opened it up and one day there were flies just coming out of it, I've also had this happen with moths and various types of litter. Certainly something you want to check.

Check the food. I know a friend of mine recently opened a bag of kibble and found maggots in the bottom. Not common and certainly not the norm with this company but apparently the bag had been ripped during transport and as it sat in store (or where ever) it was contaminated and it got flies. She chucked it out and the company replaced it free of charge for her.

Point is it's not normal but there are variables that are out of your control, check them all and if it's still happening start looking for the p**p pile. Afterall ferrets will be ferrets, there is always a shrine to the p**p gods somewhere in your house that you are unaware of, if you cannot find the source of the flies chances are the ferrets have found a good place (under a dresser likely) to construct a massive p**p pile and the flies found it before you.

    Good luck!

  5. I've had five for near two years and never had a problem with flies or bugs.

  6. I've certainly never seen any around my cage, and I have two in there.  That sounds like a problem with cleanliness.
