Question:

Do ferrets smell even after being decented?

My family loves ferrets, but my mom doesnt like the smell of them. If I buy a ferret decented, will it help the smell a lot, or will they still smell the same as one that had all of its scent glands. I would also like to know if anyone knows really good products, for keeping the smell down. Thanks.

  1. still a little, plus their litter boxes stink.

  2. So many people believe that descenting a ferret will get rid of all of their "stink." This is not the case. Ferrets have scent glands all over their body, descenting (removal of the anal scent glands) just prevents them from expelling that poof of odor when frightened (like a skunk does).

I have five ferrets right now and I notice very little smell from them (I actually like their natural smell, which is very light and I only smell it when I hold them right under my nose). Anyway, the best way to keep the smell down is: scoop litterboxes twice a day, clean the cage and everything (bedding, litterbox, pans/shelves,etc.) in it at least once a week, keep the area around the cage clean (I always suggest shampooing your carpets at least once a month), and bathe your ferret as little as possible. I used to do the once a month bathing thing, but cut back to only one or two baths a year and I think they smell less now than they did before.

  3. Yes but not as much..

this is a good link on Ferrets, spaying or neutering also helps with smell, as does good food..

the only mammal pet that doesnt smell is actualy hedgehogs

    read the link

  4. they will still smell, not as bad is if it had its scent glands, but a very distinct ferret smell, it will always be there

  5. They still have a mild odor. Also one of the major stinks is their litterbox, so you would have to scoop the litterbox about twice a day to reduce smell.

Also, we had this stuff we bought at the pet store that you spray on ferrets and it makes them smell better. it's totally safe!

Good luck, i hope you get your ferrets!
