ok so i figured that now fire trucks have up to six seats in them. so there would be no need to satnd on the back. however many fire trucks i have seen throughout various cities have places to stand on the back and even bars to hold on to. but i have never seen a firreman actually standing on the back. so do they still ride on the back and what is the purpose of the bar and ledge to stand on?

  1. I think it depends upon the situation.  You don't want to be hanging on for your life while rounding a corner at high speed.  It is neat to see a fireman on the back during a parade.  I also believe that local laws and safety considerations vary from one place to another.  Let's suppose you are in a hurry to leave.  It might make more sense to just grab on and go than to take the time to get everyone inside the vehicle.  Again, it depends upon where the risk lies.

  2. Modern firetrucks are set up on extended cab chaises, and all the firemen ride inside, wearing their seat belts.
