Do fish's scales grow back?

I have two goldfish. While I was on holiday one got caught in a rock in the tank, and my brother (who was taking care of him) got him out. But the scales on his right side are gone. He doesn't seem bothered by it but it looks pretty nasty. Will the scales regrow?

Yes they shed scales like we shed skin.

Goldfish are clumsy curious creatures and it is important that you goldfish proof your tank. No sharp decorations and no opening big enough for them to get in but small enough that they get stuck.

Yes the scales will definitely recover but certain features on the scale might not.

Certain elements such as the small pearl scales on a pearscale fish will not recover.
