Question:

Do fish have navels?

I know some birds and reptiles have navels, even though they are born from eggs, but I don't know about fish. Is there something (like an umbilical cord, or something that would leave a scar) connecting the fetus to the rest of the egg, or do they absorb nutrients some other way?

  1. Birds and reptiles do NOT have navels !!  Navels are created by the connection point of the umbilical cord, which only exists in Mammals that have a placenta, such as primates, canines, felines, humans, etc.  When most Mammals are born they are "still" connected to the placenta, which is expelled with them, via the umbilical cord.  This cord is cut or chewed off, or dries up and drops off, leaving a spot (belly button) at the point where the connection was made.  The only exception to this is the Monotremes, or egg-laying Mammals.

Fish, like Reptiles and Amphibians, do NOT have placentas, and only lay eggs.  These eggs can either be laid "outside" the body and hatch later, or held within the body and hatch inside the mother before they are born.  This is why it sometimes looks like these animals give "live" birth.  But, it is not live birth as with Mammals.  The only time there is an "egg" in Mammals is before it is fertilized.

Animals born of eggs derive their nutrients, while in the egg, from the "white" portion of the egg, which they ARE connected to, but not by an umbilical cord.  This part of the egg is completely absorbed into, and used up by, the new hatchling.  When the egg hatches the new baby has no belly button because there is no longer "any" connection.
