Just a strange question that is going through my brain. I just took some garbage out - normally during the day I'd be greeted with dozens of flies. At night, there are none. Do they sleep? Where do they go at night?

  1. They must go and sleep somewhere like the birds do in nests perhaps Good question can't wait to see the real answer

  2. one time I went outside at night and there was a whole bunch of flies sitting on the leaves on one of my trees..so I'm guessing they were sleeping!

  3. More or less.  Flies don't live long enough for it to be much of a problem.  During the night, as do many insects, they cling to the underside of leaves, etc, until dawn and the rising air temperature brings them up to full activity.

Insects can only function if the air temperature is warm enough for their metabolism to work properly.  If it's too cool at night, they become lethargic and slow down or stop completely.  By hiding, they avoid predators.

If it's warm at night, many insects do fly about.  This is the time that those great benefactors, the bats, come into play and swoop in to feed on these bugs like Mosquitoes, Gnats, Flies, Moths, etc..
