  1. They use lots of power when switched on, so advisable to leave on and not keep turning off.

    They are not very environmentally or your pocket friendly!

The older magnetic ballast did, but only until the lightbulb brightened.  Unless the ambient temperature was lower than the rating of the ballast this would only be seconds and only about 125% of the bulb's ratings.  For only a few flourescent lighting fixtures the home's electric meter isn't even sensative enough to detect it.

    With the electronic ballasts the starting current is really reduced to a minimum and is really immeasurable by most people.

  4. not so much any more.. but the old ones did.. in fact they said you are better to turn them on and leave them on rather than turning them off and on several times a day...

  5. There is a current surge in whichever light you switch on untill the filiament reaches its working temperature

  7. Used to be true with the old style ballasts but the newer bulbs are quite an energy saver.
