Question:

Do foreign countries check your home country for criminal records?

I moved from America and married a beautiful girl in Germany. I'm now applying for a residential permit so I can stay here. But on the application, it asked if I have any criminal convictions anywhere. Truth is, I acted like a dumb*ss when I was younger, getting whacked with things like disorderly conduct and trespassing--3 misdemeanors, to be exact. I don't want to list them cause I never told my wife about them...I just wanted to keep my idiot past in the past.

If I put no, is there a chance they'd do a search of their own? Or just put down only one of the charges?

  1. Yes - list them.  Be honest.  You don't want to be denied, right?  Your application very well could be if you don't come clean.

And yes, they do thorough background checks.

  2. Yes they will see that as you and the state or fbi must do a criminal background check. You can probably have those expunged or cleared from your record. Contact the courts where it happened and each state has it own background check agency. Contact the police in your hometown in the US to find how what the process is. If the records are juvi those are usually sealed when you turn 18 and expunged unless the crimes were serious.

  3. well, in my country yes, in order to get citizenship or residence, you need to get a criminal record from your home country.

i immigrated to costa rica, and a criminal record was required.
