Question:

Do foreign studens have to know how to speak Japanese before they allow you to study there?

I am 18 an I really wanna study in japan next. In maybe Tokyo universite, but do i have to speak Japanese to be allow to study there?

And if so do they have like clases were you can learn Japanese for one year and then you can strat at a universite?

  1. I'm doing a high school exchange program this year and we don't need to know Japanese beforehand. Tokyo University is probably different though, since it is the "Harvard" of Japan. You have to be really really good to get accepted there. So that means you'll probably have to know Japanese since it takes some hard-core entrance exams that high school students spend YEARS practicing for in Juku to attend..


  2. Some universities there have programs for foreigners to come and study Japanese. Of course that means they don't speak Japanese yet. I have never heard that Tokyo University does that, but there is, for example ICU, International Christian University, which I heard years ago had such a program. I could be wrong, but you might be able to find out more by inquiring at a Japanese consulate.

    most of the people in america nowadays don't speak english.
