Do future employers really contact past employers?

I am not hiding something but I am just wondering do they?

  1. Yes, they do. Some even check credit reports and driving records.  There is a difference in submitting a reference and listing past employers.

    A reference is someone who knows your skills.  You should always request your prospective reference if they will give you one. It really helps if you call them after your interview and let them know they will be contacted and what position you've applied for.  

    In listing past employers - they will speak with someone in human resources who (legally) can only verify that you worked there.

  2. It just depends.  I would want mine to contact my past employer.  Well the only one I mention on the application.

  3. From a managers point of view I do. Now some place just do your references and that could be anyone other than. they should be contact your former employer.
