Do garbage disposals have any negative effects on septic tanks?

I would think introducing all the raw food product to the tank would slow the solids breakdown process..does it effect it at all??

  1. Hi. Joy has a good answer here. The thing about all the extra stuff in the septic tank is also the water. It is just more water that the leaching field must deal with. A composting pile is a really good idea with a septic system. It is good that you are concerned about the septic system and what you put down there. It all has an effect and eventually the septic will have to be replaced. The best thing you can do is add an effluent filter to the outfall of the septic tank. It is in most cases just a slide in unit and just has to be hosed off once a year. It will add years to the life of a field. Hope this helps.


  2. I don't think disposals are a good idea to use if you have a septic tank.  Call your local health department and check with them.
