Do garter snakes eat each other???

i had 2 snakes in my tank and now the smaller one is missing.could the other garter snake have eaten it?????

  1. if it's nowhere to be found then yes its a high probability, snakes are solitary animals and only really come together to mate!


  2. All snakes are solitary animals. Garter Snakes can be cannibalistic if housed together. The bigger garter snake may have simply ate the smaller snake. Don't house snakes together it stresses them out too.

  3. While it's not impossible, it's highly unlikely that a garter snake ate it's roommate. It's a higher possibility that one of your snakes has escaped. I've been raising eastern garter snakes for over 40 yrs and never have had any type of cannibalism amongst my specimens and I routinely mix garter snakes of all sizes together.

  4. It's possible. Most snakes eat each other is one is smaller.  Did you check under all the substrate and decorations in the tank?  

  5. if the bigger snake isn't much bigger than the smaller one check to see if there is a bump in the snake that is still in the tank.
