Question:

Do gerbils smell at all?

I'm thinking about getting 2 gerbils that will be kept in my room.

I've been reading about them and I've mostly been seeing that they don't smell.

However, I read this about hedgehogs before I got one and found out that it's correct, technically, but the waste they produce is terrible!!!

Is this true of gerbils?

  1. Well, definetely in comparison to other animals there is no smell.

It differs really......Guinea Pigs have a slight smell but nothing much..you could only smell it from beside the cage, hamsters have even less of a scent and dwarf hamsters are practically scentless............all problems can be sorted by regular cage cleaning though.

Keeping them in your room should be no problem however you should understand that when playing or burrowing sawdust will leave the cage, it won't go far though, and depending on the gerbils size, you may be using hay so my advice is go for it!

  2. gerbils dont smell atall u can clean them out every 2-3 weeks instead of every week for rats mice etc they are very clean animals that dont smell atul and there cute as

  3. well dah of coarce they do

  4. Hey!

Gerbils come from the desert, so they eat and drink much less. So, less p**p and pee.

They are one of the cleanest rodents!

They are a delight to have!

Good luck and have a great day!

  5. The smell the least out of any pet you can have. You may get a smell if there isn't good ventilation, but other than that, they are great!

  6. We have a couple of gerbils and they don't smell.. I clean the cage every 2 weeks with the wood chips. They are great pets just remember they are more active at night.

They are a fun pet to have if you want something that is low maintenance and you don't have to clean every day.

  7. Gerbils, themselves, do not smell. They may have a wood smell to them if you house them in wood shavings. It's the waste that you're really smelling. Gerbils, being desert animals, drink less water than other rodents. Less water = less urine produced. Less urine = less smell. They do p**p a ton, though.

I can easily go 2-3 weeks without changing my gerbil's bedding, and it still smells very little. Compared to most other rodents, if not all, they don't smell. I keep my gerbils in my room and no one notices a gerbil smell when they walk in. The only way you'll really smell something..not pleasant..is if you stick your head in their tank and take a big whiff. As long as you clean the tank/cage out as needed, the smell should be very minimal.

  8. well.......they wont smell as long as you clean there cage out after about 2- mabye 3 weeks
