  1. To a certain extent its mainly personal preference.  Some like the feel of the more expensive balls....some think its a status symbol,  Others actually do hit them longer and they will spin more to control distances on the green.

  2. I think the best balls are Titleist Pro V 1's. They seem to be consistently the straightest; which is the goal in golf. Even for the Ladies they work very well, in my opinion

  3. Players who are more advanced usually use the more expensive ones because when you have a consistent and great swing, the ball might go a little farther (maybe an extra few yards). But me, I just use the cheaper ones.

  4. Actually, the more expensive balls don't go farther at all in fact, they're not designed for distance, they're designed for "control".  As in, shaping a shot.  Consider an imaginary round. On one hole, you are faced with a pin placement that is on the back portion of the green. The ideal shot? Possibly a slight “draw” to guarantee the ball gets back to the hole.

This is best done with the likes of a Nike Black/Platinum or a Titleist Pro v1x type of golf ball.  If the ball is made with more than 3 pieces, it's designed for control.

2 piece golf balls (I use the Nike Juice) are designed for distance and not control.  For example, I can drive my Nike Juice ball like I was hitting it with a baseball bat however, I can only hit it straight as an arrow.  I cannot "shape" my shot into a slight fade or a draw no matter how hard I try.

For me though, (only been playing a couple of years) straight and distance is what I want.  I'm not good enough yet to try and shape my shots so the 2 piece golf balls have always worked well for me.

    Hope this helps.

  5. Most players who play the more expensive ball expect better results. Tiger plays it!  Vijay plays it!  . So it is the " magic pill " which will make the game better. I'm not sure the $20 per dozen is a worse ball because of price. I think it has to do more with ego.  I use many FINDZEES and every one seems to perform well. If you have a sound golf swing any ball will do, and the player will put spin it, not because of the brand but due to that sound swing.
